About this procedure

Foreign nationals staying in Iraq for more than the period granted on entry must obtain a residency card from the Directorate of Residence.

Applications must be sponsored by an employer, a family member or an accredited institution.

Steps to follow

  1. Secure a sponsor

The sponsor submits a letter of undertaking together with a copy of their own identity or commercial registration.

  2. Complete the medical screening

A blood test at an approved public health laboratory is required for first-time applicants.

  3. Submit the application file

The file includes the passport, entry visa, sponsor letter, medical result and four photographs.

  4. Attend the security interview

A short interview and a fingerprint record are taken before the file is referred for approval.

  5. Collect the residency card

Cards are issued for one year and must be renewed at least two weeks before expiry.
