About this procedure
A birth must be registered within thirty days. Registration after that period is still possible but requires a fine and, after one year, a court order.
The birth notification issued by the hospital or the health centre is the key document.
Steps to follow
Obtain the birth notification
The hospital or health centre where the birth took place issues a numbered birth notification.
Attend the civil status office
Either parent may register. Bring the marriage contract, both parents' identity documents and the birth notification.
Choose and record the name
The child's full name is entered into the family record book at this stage and cannot be changed later without a court order.
Receive the certificate
The certificate is normally printed and released during the same visit.
