About this procedure

Every vehicle on Iraqi roads must carry a valid registration document issued by the traffic directorate of the governorate where the owner resides.

Transfers require both parties, or a notarised power of attorney, and a technical inspection of the vehicle.

Steps to follow

  1. Present the source documents

For an import, the customs clearance form; for a local purchase, the previous registration and the notarised sale contract.

  2. Pass the technical inspection

The chassis and engine numbers are verified against the documents and the vehicle's condition is checked.

  3. Clear outstanding fines

Ownership cannot be transferred while unpaid traffic fines are registered against the vehicle.

  4. Pay the fees and collect the plates

Registration fees and plate charges are paid together; new plates and the registration card are issued at the counter.
